Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA)Recommended for VAT-registered businesses

❌ Without PVA: Import VAT is paid at the border or via your freight agent. You reclaim it on your next VAT return, creating a cash flow delay.

⚠️ Guidance only. Actual duty rates depend on commodity codes, country of origin, and trade agreements. Verify with HMRC or a customs broker.

How Import VAT Works

The Calculation

Import VAT is calculated on the customs value, which includes:

  • Purchase price of goods
  • Shipping and freight costs
  • Insurance
  • Customs duty

VAT is then charged at 20% on this total.

Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA)

Since 1 January 2021, VAT-registered UK businesses can use PVA. Instead of paying import VAT at the border and waiting to reclaim it, you account for it on your VAT return:

  • ✅ Better cash flow — no upfront VAT payment
  • ✅ Box 1 and Box 4 entries offset each other (VAT-neutral if fully taxable)
  • ✅ Use HMRC's Monthly Postponed Import VAT Statement (MPIVS)

Customs Duty Rates

Duty rates vary widely by commodity code (0% to 25%+). Check the UK Global Tariff for your specific product. Enter your duty rate as a percentage in the calculator.

Excise Goods

For excise goods (alcohol, tobacco, fuel), excise duty is also charged. This calculator covers standard import VAT only.
